Today marks the launch of the Generation Isolation report by OnSide Youth Zones, which underscores the urgent need for real-life alternatives to smartphone dependency among London’s youth. This report highlights that a staggering 21% of young people aged 11 to 18 in London spend most of their free time glued to their smartphones. Here at Unitas, we recognise the profound impact this digital isolation has on our young people and are committed to providing the safe, affordable, and engaging activities they crave.

According to the report, more than half (54%) of young people in London express a desire to break their smartphone habits, yet many feel uncertain about how to do so. With 51% of respondents reporting high levels of loneliness and 56% experiencing significant anxiety, the need for supportive community spaces has never been clearer. As Robin Moss, our Chief Executive, stated, “The challenge is that young people are lonely, isolated, anxious, and spend huge amounts of time on screens. But the report highlights a powerful solution: youth centres and youth workers, who offer in-person, positive, meaningful activities in a safe environment.”

Unitas Youth Zone plays a critical role in addressing these challenges by offering a variety of activities designed to foster real-life social connections. Our dedicated youth workers provide mentorship, support, and role models for young people, helping them navigate their feelings of loneliness and anxiety. As we celebrate National Youth Work Week, it’s essential to recognise the invaluable contributions of our youth workers who create an inclusive and nurturing environment where young people can thrive.

The findings from Generation Isolation reveal that young people are eager for more affordable leisure activities and safe social spaces. A staggering 95% of those surveyed believe that youth centres like Unitas would significantly improve their lives outside of school. We are dedicated to ensuring that every young person in Barnet has access to high-quality youth services, empowering them to build lasting friendships, develop essential life skills, and pursue their passions in a supportive community.

As we move forward, Unitas Youth Zone remains steadfast in its mission to combat isolation and provide meaningful experiences for our young people. We invite everyone in our community to join us in advocating for enhanced youth provision and support for our vital work. Together, we can help break the cycle of isolation and create a brighter future for the next generation.
